Ulyer deRisma (born Ulyer Rzma Kan in 703) is the Pasori owner of Vzala Ar/ Red Bear Firearms. He is best known for his brief but dramatic political career and his friendship with the Emperor.
<!--
Early life
deRisma was born and raised in the Fourth Clan of the Kan tribe. He gained distinction at the age of 13 for killing two members of the rival Mepat tribe by himself. By his own account he left the tribe for good when he was 16, although there is enough information to suggest that he was in fact expelled from his tribe for not passing the manhood test or for a similar reason.

deRisma was accepted into the Mesdan army in 720 where he served for a time with the future Emperor deSadar before being transferred to another unit. After the end of the war deRisma migrated north once more and took up residence in the newly formed state of Treston and began working for Immigration services. He also joined the Friends movement at this time.

Political career
As with many Pasori politicians at the time, his success was propelled by the growing population of Pasori citizens moving into the new states. A glib and reassuring speaker, deRisma quickly gained support from Santri Committee members as well as the younger generation of Pasori immigrants. deRisma gained a permanent seat on the Committee in 731 with eyes on gaining power within Treston's higher offices.

He ran for the seat of Party Secretary in 733 but failed to garner enough votes in the primary round of voting. After the bombing of the Parliament building and assassination of Secretary deVudres he renewed his efforts to gain the seat. Of the three candidates, his position was weakest and was also seen as a hindrance to deSadar's potential success. deRisma eventually dropped out of the running on his own accord, effectively giving his supporters to deSadar's campaign and securing his rival's victory.

Following his political failure deRisma dropped out of public view. His concession was seen as a grave weakness by his former Pasori supporters, and he lost support from many Santri sympathizers as well due to harsh criticisms given during his campaign. -->

Business career
In 737 deRisma was charged by the Emperor to take over the failing Red Bear Firearms, a manufacturing plant located on the Eastern edge of the country. Thanks to his involvement Red Bear has expanded tremendously to become the primary arms manufacturer for the Army of the Territories. Its success has consequently made deRisma one of the wealthiest citizens in the North.
<!--
Personal life
deRisma married in 734, but has no children. His ex-wife, Nevva deRisma, was granted separation after their 8 year marriage and is remarried and is currently living elsewhere.

He is also relatively well-known for his pipe-carving. His hand-carved designs lean towards abstract and violent interpretations of nature and fetch a high price on the market. -->
Rana was born around the time Luca was elected General Secretary, and appeared quite often at his public appearances as an infant in her mothers arms. During her early teenage years however she fell out of public view. Whether this is due to her father's wishes or her own remains unknown at this time.
Those familiar with her have described her as having a strong personality, and is sometimes difficult to get along with. When not spending time with her brother she prefers to be alone. However, she excels in all of her studies and has been lauded by her tutors for her excellent math, music and language skills.

Pasori refers to the ethnic group and persons occupying the northern latitudes of Dia. They consider themselves the "first born people," a view shared by the Santri and Carissi, who also think of them as an aboriginal society. In Basori, "Pasori" literally translates to the "true people."

The Pasori are physically characterized by their compact statures and swarthy features.

History
old history, war wives etc
caris abductions
sadar/ war
luca
Society
Pasori society is rigidly structured on all levels. top tribes vs low tribes, tribal death, woman seer, tribal leader, subtribes
Organization
Intertribal structure
The six extant tribes of the Pasori are the Pasori Gulo, Pasori Kan, Pasori Kal, Pasori Llivor, Pasori Mepat, and Pasori Tovat. The Pasori Ar were wiped out by human trafficking during King Amakessar IV's reign.

Polygamous marriage is a common occurrence in the far northern tribes. Leaders are known to have dozens of women in their harems. Tribes closer to the southern border tend to foster marriages with fewer women per husband.
Xenophobia
As a general rule, the tribes dislike and avoid non-Pasori peoples. Especially up north where the only access to other peoples is through coastal sea-travel, outsiders are often killed upon sight.

In the last century, in conjunction with Santri and Carissi expansion, the tribes have been forced to interact with others more often than they would prefer. The southernmost Pasori on the border developed a working relationship with Mesda in order to trade furs and other resources for arms to aid with infighting. The Bear tribe also formed a connection with Caris slave traders.

At the present the Pasori accept the Santri and trust them, thanks to their alliance during the war. All tribal members despise Carissi and will go to great lengths to avoid or attack them, depending.
Hunting and agriculture
The various tribes have different means of obtaining food, ranging from primarily hunting and gathering in the North to a completely agricultural society in the South.

All tribes keep animals, especially donkeys for labor purposes, but for nomadic tribes such as the Pasori Gulo keeping a larger flock in such an extreme environment is out of the question. Many sedentary tribes keep flocks of domesticated goats and in some cases, cattle.

Southern tribes also cultivate a wide variety of crops and vegetables. As these tribes sometimes border Santri towns and villages, there is some trading between peoples and the Pasori have gained different types of crops this way.
Economy
Most tribes do not use currency. Within the tribe, items of equal value may be traded or given (to be repaid later). The relative value of different objects is often a matter of debate, making the Pasori consummate hagglers.

Trading between tribes is limited to those tribes who have formed a positive relationship with each other. Even then, traded items tend to be neutral (clothing, trinkets or prepared foods) and not goods that could potentially give rival an advantage (weapons or seeds).

The Pasori who trade with Santri usually offer only hides. Seal hides are especially prized by the Santri, as are rare reindeer hides. In return the Pasori invariably ask for guns and ammunition. During the warmer months season, southerners may also try to barter for seeds in order to grow crops.

Sexuality
Procreation is considered a routine activity, and not much attention is given to it. It is customary for a pair to engage in sexual activity in relative public, a practice that early Santri explorers found barbaric. Married men and women couple at whim, but if a man tries to bed a woman that he hasn't claimed (or is claimed by another), a violent confrontation is certain to occur.

Pasori society does not allow for many deviations from the norm, especially in matters of sexuality. Men are expected to father as many children as they can within their tribe, and often take several wives if their means allow. Women are expected to service their husbands and are also expected bear as many children in their lifetimes as possible.

Homosexuality in women and men is considered not only an aberration but an actual threat to the tribe. Members feel strongly that it is a waste to expend energy and resources on an individual who is not planning to contribute to the growth of the tribe. Active homosexuals are often expelled from the tribe if discovered, or in extreme cases even executed.

Culture
Spirituality
While superstitious, traditional Pasori do not follow a religion. Tribe members are expected to act along certain totem-based moral rules but do not worship these animals as a higher power. Otherwise, the Pasori are very motivated to behave in a way that will ensure the survival of their families and tribes. Individuals can become very emotional when describing their sacrifices towards this goal. Additionally, the Pasori do not believe in a true afterlife outside of the idea of historical family honor (or dishonor) following their progeny.

One recent trend is that of emigrated Pasori converting to Generalism. This adoption does not sit well with tribal members still living in the far north, though they are powerless to stop it.

Gender roles
In all of the Pasori tribes, males and females fulfill separate roles and functions. Common male tasks include the policy making, herding, hunting, weapon-making and building. Females carry out work such as butchery, cooking, child-rearing and gathering vegetation. A few jobs, such as medicinal practices and soothsaying, may be assigned to either gender based on skill or natural predisposition.

Pasori men and women also remain socially distant during the course of a normal day. In many tribes a few larger tents may be erected to sleep or house the activities of one gender alone. Smaller communal tents offer a space where mixing between the sexes (such as for a private ceremony or discussion) can occur. These tents may also be used for intercourse during in colder months or regions.

Despite the divide between the genders, neither side serves the other. Both genders enjoy trying to gain an upper hand on the other during the communal hours. While men hold more power in leading the tribes, there are many popular stories where the well placed jibe of a woman has brought his plans crashing down. It is considered sport for a man and woman to exchange verbal attacks to try to shame the other in front of their peers. However, an honorable woman is expected to bow unquestioningly to a man's demands if it serves the overall good of the tribe.

A common saying of male Pasori: "Women are the ground, and men are the trees. We may be rooted in them, but always rise above them."

Ceremonies
Each Pasori tribe follows rituals modified specifically towards their totems and traditions. However each tribe shares several basic rituals and ceremonies. Ceremonies are different for different sexes and are kept private and separate from each other.

The first ritual a child undergoes is the naming ritual, in which an infant is given its name at the end of its 8th month of life. Since the Pasori (mistakenly) believe that a baby develops in the womb for 8 months, the end of that same amount of time outside of the mother's body represents its transition from that mysterious realm to the human one. Names are chosen to impart luck or skill upon the child, and are selected to have positive connotation. Names with meanings such as 'sharp-eyed' and 'healthy' are common, as well as names with physical motifs such as 'hot spring' and 'rock.' Other less common names represent a specific need of the tribe or family at the time of birth, such as 'heavy rain' or 'fish hook'. These names are of particular interest to scholars as they are another indirect means by which the Pasori record their history.

Blooding is a rite of passage by which a male individual shows their loyalty to the tribe by killing a member of a warring tribe. For the most part blooding may take place either before or after the male adulthood ceremony, but most members do not have an opportunity to become blooded until after they have achieved their manhood. This practice prolongs feuding between tribes, in some cases for hundreds of years, and has led to the extinction of several.

The adulthood ceremony marks the end of childhood and the beginning of an individual's life as a valuable member of the tribe or clan. For both sexes there is a combination of dances, oral recitations and other ceremonies that must be carried out correctly in order to gain adulthood. There is no physical marker of adulthood once the ceremony has been completed, but the successful individual is allowed to set up his own home on the border of the clan's living area. If accepted they are also granted the status of practitioner of whatever occupation they have decided to pursue. They may also take a wife at this time, or for the women, become eligible for marriage.

Myriad smaller rituals exist for daily life as well, mostly verbal recitations.
Art
The Pasori do not devote a great amount of time in the pursuit of arts, but many practice it occasionally in order to decorate personal objects or as gifts to present to the head of the clan or tribe. Some of the larger clans have been known to employ an artisan though normally individuals cultivate their skills in addition to their primary work.

Typical forms of Pasori art are beading, embroidery and carving. The Pasori are also lauded for their leather working abilities.

Each person is responsible for a ceremonial dress, an overcoat with leggings signifying their place within the tribe and their strengths. The dress is often covered with sewn images and items such as animal teeth and beaded stones. Members of a family assist each other in creating these individualistic pieces. At tribal gatherings they are useful in identifying individuals who perhaps have not been seen for many years.

Tree carving is another form of art. A living tree is chosen to become a carving, and work commences on it. It is a testament to the skill of the carvers to keep the tree alive and create a permanent marker for the tribe. The trees are generally chosen in an out-of-the-way location on the tribal territory, and rarely found intact as warring tribes single them out for destruction.

Telling folk tales are another important Pasori tradition, often accompanied by costume and acting. Popular stories include tribal origin stories such as "How Father Dark Spared the Animals", or anthropomorphic tales such as "How Gulo Bested the Others".

Historical treatment
discriminations
Current Status
In the last 30 years acceptance of Pasori members into 'civilized' society has increase dramatically. The election of deSadar in 735 was an astounding upset reflecting the changing make-up of the times. Since his ascension to Emperor, the integration of Pasori people and beliefs in daily life has continued to grow.

A current issue pursued by the deSadar regime is the matter of reparation for the 30 Years War. Citeran refuses to recognize the New Territories as being the same government as Mesda, to whom their debts are due. On a more personal level the Pasori tribes are also seeking restitution for the crimes committed against it by the Amakessarian Kings. At the present it is unlikely that Citeran will admit its fault in this area. Additionally, Citeran is likely without the means to pay either amount considering the totality of their defeat in the war.

Basori is a general term for the language of the Pasori peoples. It literally means "the true language."

The spoken language is recognizable across the Pasori Empire, although there are many dialects and tribe-specific vocabularies.

Written Basori
Up until very recently Basori had been a spoken language only. The written component was introduced in 737 by the Emperor, who had developed it over the course of a few years. It's original purpose was to phonetically convert the Santri bible into a form that Basori speakers could understand. As such, the alphabet can be written with the Santri alphabet as well as in an Basori alphabet, which was created specifically to cater to Pasori motifs and tastes.

Suda is well-loved by all citizens of the Territories. His birth was cause for celebration among the Pasori people, as it ensured the continuation of the venerable Sadar family bloodline. The Santri have taken to him as well, due to his easy-going nature and likable attitude. His growth has been closely followed by the country by means of newspaper accounts and public appearances, many citizens feel a deep attachment from following his progress so closely. The 750 census showed that Suda was the second most popular name for newborn boys, after Luca.

In an anonymous poll carried out by the underground publication, The Tide, over 70% of persons polled said they would rather have Suda serving as the current head of state.

Prince Suda constantly undergoes training in anticipation of his future role. Furthermore, the Emperor has allowed his son to serve as Regent in a few highly publicized instances. Suda is fully expected to succeed his father as the Emperor of the Northern Territories.
Luca deSadar (born Luca Sadar Gulo in 705) is the Pasori ruler of the Northern Territories. He is best known for reunifying the Outer Territories with the primarily Santri state of Treston, and eventually assimilating the remnants of Old Mesda. While originally voted into office, during subsequent years in office he has dissolved his cabinet and all other checks to his power. He has a well-developed cult of personality and is generally considered to be a dictator. The Emperor is currently preoccupied with border disputes between the Territories and its neighboring country, Caris.

Early years
Luca Sadar Gulo is the 17th and youngest legitimate child of Sadar Duvida Gulo, legendary champion of the Pasori Gulo. The identity of his mother is unknown, but assumed to be one of Sadar's several wives. Luca would have been last in line for succession after his eight brothers. However, wartime circumstances led to his being his father's last living heir.

As far as it known, Luca never had any significant interactions with his immediate family. When asked by a close acquaintance if he had any memory of his parents, he is said to have replied, "They gave me a name, that is more than enough." (cite)
Custody controversy
Shortly after his birth Luca fell into the care of his aunt, Mazini Duvida Gulo. It is disputed as to whether or not he was abducted by his aunt or given into her care by either Sadar or one of his wives. The former theory is better supported, given the nature of Luca's reunion with his tribe. Mazini went into hiding and finally settled in the coastal town of Polisa. She changed her name to Mazie and Luca's name to Bezo. The two of them maintained a small store together until her death.
Childhood
Most of what is known of Luca's childhood comes from his official biography and interviews with his wife. From these accounts we learn that Luca (called Bezo), became highly skilled at identifying and collecting local flora and fauna. He also aided in upkeep of Mazini's shop, located at the front of the wooden structure they lived in. Luca mentions in his biography that he was not permitted to stray from his assigned tasks, which aided him in developing his incredible focus later in life. During this period he was tutored in Carissi speech by an acquaintance of his aunt, and was also urged to speak Santri as much as possible as to rid himself of a Pasori accent.

Luca also met his future wife in Polisa. Personal accounts indicate that they did not always get along, though evidently his impression of her was long-lasting.

<!--In 718 Luca was reacquired by his uncle, Ronbe Duvida Gulo. Ronbe or his associates murdered Mazini and burned the store. Remnants of the structure can allegedly still be found on the hill overlooking the now abandoned town.
Early adulthood in the tribes
<!--
Service
In 720 Luca joined the Mesdan army in a bid to gain citizenship, and received the modifier to his last name. He received basic training at ____.

Records from the time period preceding the dissolution of Old Mesda are spotty at best, but according to sources Luca served a year at __map___ and another in __map__. Combat was heavy at both locations. At that time Caris was entering its last stage of withdrawal from the frontlines before the final 5-year siege. In 723 deSadar volunteered to assist in the failed Southern assault.

In May of 723 deSadar was captured by Caris soldiers and endured several years as a prisoner of war. Other than that he suffered several injuries, nothing more is known from this time period. A year or two into his rule the Emperor ordered all enemy persons and documents related to his imprisonment to be eradicated.

Following his release at the end of the war, deSadar moved back north to the city of Barzon.
Entry into politics
The dissolution of Old Mesda from 727-728 was a tumultuous period for the entire world. Countless new city-states and rudimentary countries were formed, disbanded or absorbed by stronger ones. The people made it adamantly clear that they craved stability after decades of war and upheaval. The small country of Treston (Freedom) in the far north lured many of the youth with promises of equality and rights for the people. Despite harsh northern living conditions, the population of Treston swelled and a parliamentary government formed.

Treston was the first country in the world at that time to offer full citizenship and voting rights to persons of any race or creed. In early years of the country, following the traditional pattern, only Santri or Carissi leaders ran for positions in the cabinet or other titles. However, with the burgeoning and diverse population came a need for leaders familiar with and sensitive to the swiftly growing Pasori constituent.

The future Emperor took small jobs after moving to Barzon, mostly related to interpreting and translation due to his fluency with the major languages and his inability to perform physical tasks. He spent several years with the ____name of church____ of Barzon and eventually moved on to doing contracted work for several business as well. Those familiar with his work in the interpreting capacity urged him to become more involved in government, which at the time was in dire need of Basori speakers. In 731 Luca served as an aide and personal interpreter for the Party Secretary, and was also granted membership into the political party, The Committee of Friends. In 732 Luca was appointed Minister of Intercultural Affairs by the Treston cabinet.

There are often questions about how a relatively unknown individual could work his way up the political ladder so quickly. Many have attributed to his success to his multilingualism, as he would be privy to several avenues of important information without seeming to be. Others have given the credit to his being the surviving son of a near-mythological figure- and the recipient of a large amount popular support- though the author notes that Luca did not publicly announce his identity as such until the Electon of 735. Another theory is that he was quietly but effectively backed for various reasons by his political party, The Committee. Through one or more of these means, Luca achieved a relatively large leap in status in a short time.

During this period Luca also renewed his contact with Phe, who had heard about him through public channels.
===Election of 735=== -->
The regime
Emperor deSadar's regime has been a mix of elected office and forcibly held leadership. His continued successful control over the peoples of the Territories is usually explained by a combination of above-average leadership and liberal use of fear tactics. Despite the lack of several freedoms, the people of the Territories do not often rebel.
The government regulates the economy heavily, and does not allow practice of the Caris religion.
Economics
Many of the traditional Mesdan enterprises were lost after the dissolution. Emperor deSadar spent the first two years in office reviving the once-flourishing industries with his cry of "Rebuild, rebuild, rebuild!" The modern cities of the Territories are in debt to the hard work of those involved in lumber, mining, construction, labor, etc. The textiles and agriculture industries also boomed with the influx of new citizenry.
Presently the government assigns managers to all companies who must report back with positive result in order to keep their positions. Unlike certain totalitarian systems, the Emperor's regime makes an effort to assign the appropriate leaders to increase productivity and efficiency. Business reports are often checked or verified by undercover employees, and any corner-cutting or misrepresentation is dealt with swiftly and harshly.
Pasori-Santri mixing
Another great challenge to the Emperor's rule is the demographics of his country: estimated percentages show the makeup of the territories to be 70% Santri and 30% (reported) Pasori, with the numbers increasing steadily. With a background rooted deeply in both cultures, the Emperor does what he can to ensure peace between the two groups. Politically, the Emperor has been a strong supporter of integration but allows for state-specific segregation (determined by local votes) in the name of keeping peace.
deSadar makes a great effort to tie his millions of Santri and Pasori citizens together, often referring to himself as a father figure to both groups. The younger and more impressionable generations in particular tend to adore him as a warrior for freedom.
Propaganda and terror
The Emperor has utilized propaganda since his third elected year in office. In addition to media in the form of statues, posters and radio broadcast, the Emperor and his officials have been accused of publishing false statistics and of making unverified accusations against certain undesirable groups. There is no newspaper other than those from government censored/ regulated publications, although there are a few illegal periodicals.
Dissenters or those who have been charged with an insult against the regime are swiftly punished. Many are sentenced to harsh work camps for some amount of time, but an undisclosed number are often sent away and never heard from again.
War with Caris
On June 11, 754 the Emperor declared war on Caris. The declaration followed the alleged murder of his wife by Carissi ambassadors.
<!--===Technology===
Disputed genocide
==Cultural disparity==-->
Health
The Emperor suffers from several health issues due to inadequate childhood care and injuries inflicted while imprisoned. His most significant injury is that to his lower right leg, which is amputated midway below the knee. The foot and lower leg required amputation after gangrene developed in an untreated bullet wound. He suffers several broken fingers on both hands, mostly hidden from the public by gloves. He is also missing two upper incisors and wears dentures to mask the space.

From palace accounts the Emperor is a very heavy eater, consuming several large meals a day. His physician has made it clear that such gluttonous behavior can lead to undesirable health effects, although no noticeable weight gain has been recorded over the course of his regime. Because of this, some have surmised that the Emperor may be hiding a serious illness.

There is also some question as to the Emperor's mental stability. Early criticisms by his opponents during the 735 election often refer to nervous ailments and anxious behaviors. Admittedly it is difficult at this point in time to separate slander from truthful accusations as many of these opponents have since disappeared. It is also well known that the Emperor talks to himself, though this is regarded as more of a harmless peculiarity than an indication of madness.

Family
Luca married his childhood Santri friend, Phe deBetel, in 733. During that time interracial marriages were not openly supported by the majority of the population, so their union was not made public knowledge until two years later (although they had been living together for a year).

Luca has three children by Phe; Rana, Suda and Hyla deSadar. Luca is often portrayed with them in photographs as a strong father figure, furthering his deliberately cultivated image as a 'father' to the country.
Religious beliefs
Two of the three major religious systems are supported by Luca's regime. The major religion of the Territories is Santri Generalism (and branches thereof), followed by the regional religions of the Pasori tribes. It is forbidden to study the Invidgeon or invoke Carissi words under penalty of public humiliation, imprisonment or worse.

The Emperor himself is supposedly atheistic, though it is obvious from speeches and public conversations with the people that he is well versed in all three.
<!--
deRisma was born and raised in the Fourth Clan of the Kan tribe. He gained distinction at the age of 13 for killing two members of the rival Mepat tribe by himself. By his own account he left the tribe for good when he was 16, although there is enough information to suggest that he was in fact expelled from his tribe for not passing the manhood test or for a similar reason.

deRisma was accepted into the Mesdan army in 720 where he coincidentally served for a time with the future Emperor deSadar before being transferred to another unit.

Business career
In 737 deRisma was charged by the Emperor to take over the failing Red Bear Firearms, a manufacturing plant located on the Eastern edge of the country. Thanks to his involvement Red Bear has grown tremendously to become the primary manufacturer of army handguns and rifles. Its success has consequently made deRisma one of the wealthiest citizens in the Territories.

The Northern Territories, also called The Territories, are comprised of all of the lands of Old Mesda combined with those of the Pasori Nation (formerly called Borea). The Territories are ruled by Emperor deSadar.

Old Mesda collapsed after end of the Thirty Years War due to widespread famine and unrest. The North succeeded in retaining some government and structure and recovered in a short amount of time. The South suffered badly from military leaders and secessionists for a great while until the reunification.

The city of Treston was one of the first recovering hubs of what would become the Territories. Treston declared itself a country in 728. In 737 Emperor deSadar led the Olo Acquisition, gaining the region of the same name. In following years the Emperor continued his expansion. Steffonia, harbor for the anarchists of the previous years, was the last to join in 741.

deSadar re-titled himself Emperor in 738, after uniting the Pasori Nation with the Lower Territories.
